It is all too good to be true, which for those of us with any sort of social media literacy at all can see – the downfalls of our connectedness are starting to overwhelm the benefits. ![]() The candy house in the title is referring to a few different things, mainly the promise of a cache of riches – the literal candy house in the tale Hansel and Gretel, or for many of us today, the unending possibilities of the internet, and the collective conscience in this book. The Candy House by Jennifer Egan is a warning wrapped in multiple layers of story. Right off the bat, just want to warn you all this book is NOT about candy, or treats of any kind (disappointing, I know). ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() The writing is vivid, the descriptions beautiful and often disturbing. There are several unexpected twists and turns in the gripping plot and the ending is bittersweet, but satisfying. Readers who loved Fisher’s first book will not be disappointed with this creepy, intelligent offering. It may be their only hope for escape, but they will risk the wrath of the Prison to get it. While Finn struggles to survive the rules of Protocal, which require everyone to live without technology, and to remember who he really is, his oathbrother, Keiro, and friend, Attia, must brave the perils of the prison and find Sapphique’s glove. Finn finds Outside to be a prison of a whole new order, one where he must prove himself to be the rightful heir to the throne, even though he may not believe it himself. Finn, a prisoner who cannot remember his past, has escaped with the help of the warden’s daughter, Claudia. Incarceron is a living prison, a place of horrid squalor and human suffering. Sapphique is the dark and thrilling sequel to the dystopian fantasy novel Incarceron. ![]() ![]() The Crisis in British Journalism Byline Times investigates media monopolies, their proximity to politicians, and how the punditocracy doesn’t hold power to account. The Cost of Living Crisis Byline Times investigates the causes and consequences of Britain’s biggest recession for 30 years. ![]() Democracy in Danger The newspaper’s extensive reporting and analysis of the various threats to democracy from populism, oligarchy, dark money and online disinformation. The Climate Emergency Byline Times‘ coverage of the consequences of, and responses to, the climate crisis.Culture History, music, cooking, travel, books, theatre, film – but also with an eye on the ‘culture wars’, nationalism and identity.Reportage Immersive and current news, informed by frontline reporting and real-life accounts.Argument Honestly held opinions and provocative argument based on current events or our recent reports.Fact Articles predominantly based on historical research, official reports, court documents and open source intelligence. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() It’s a nice little earner, but Maurice and the gang come unstuck in a village called Furry Bottom. Of the supporting cast David Tennant is wonderful as the rats’ spiritual guru Dangerous Beans, an ageing crusty in a holey jumper. Lees The Amazing Maurice and his Educated Rodents (Discworld Novel 28) door Terry Pratchett verkrijgbaar bij Rakuten Kobo. The setting is ye olde bubonic times, where Maurice (Hugh Laurie) is a conniving ginger tom, and the brains behind a Pied Piper racket. The film is a riot of silliness from start to finish, featuring top dollar actors hamming it up nicely, making up for some not especially dazzling animation. My favourite moment involves a rat at death’s door coming face to face with the grim squeaker. T he rodent in charge of the rescue mission explains that picking up the scent of their missing comrade was easy: “He was widdling all the way.” Just one of the many hilarious lines in this family animation adapted from the Terry Pratchett children’s novel about a crew of scam artist rodents. ![]() ![]() ![]() There were moments it seemed like they were, but since the author chose to not give any intimacy details, I assumed Anna wasn’t ready yet. ![]() The details missing are like how book 1 mentions mating & a wedding several times throughout the book but only half-heartedly gives cliff notes that the wedding occurred, when other books would actually give it a chapter to help grow the characters.Īnother example, from book 2, I honestly thought that Charles & Anna were not having intercourse, other than that 1 time in the 1st book. While I truly believe this series is enjoyable, it’s missing adult-level intimacy & so many details. The more important details are necessary for me to become immersed. When I read a series, I want to be transported from everyday worries & get lost in the talents of authors. I gave 5 stars because this story deserves respect even though it’s not for me. I can’t continue when this is not what I was looking for. ![]() ![]() This series is missing so many other character development details that I need in a story but are given whimsical lines after the fact, instead of covering them in an epilogue. In short, I was looking for a unique shifter romance with the Alpha & Omega positions but this is more suited to those who prefer romance without any intimacy details at all. ![]() |
